Bodies of Water ~水体~ a dive in Shanghai 13th Contemporary Art Biennale

Every two years, Shanghai’s contemporary museum the Power Station of Art (official website) hosts the Shanghai Biennale. It’s one subway station away from our atelier, themed around “Bodies of Water”… yeah just like the latest collection, so I got curious and had to report back! So here is a quick tour into:

Bodies of Water ~ 水体

“‘Bodies of Water’ […] looks into the liquid nature of human, more-than-human, and post-human bodies, and into the fluid ways in which they infiltrate, constitute, and relate to one another. The Biennale explores the historic and contemporary tensions, the over and under-explored possibilities, and the forms of consensual, dissident, and alternative forms of being that are made possible by bodies of water.”

Andres Jaque (official site) – Chief Curator

Three floors for an uneven but interesting exhibition. Several pieces really stood out, such as Liam Young’s mesmerizing headpieces’ designs and futuristic planet videos! Aesthetic, contemplative, eerie… quite in line with the pulse of Shanghai.
Right behind, the dreamy installation from Ayesha Tan Jones , the cleverly obvious pieces from Revital Cohen & Tuur Van Balen, and the peacefully cute whales from Zadie Xa & Benito Mayor Vallejo.
